Just about figured out...

Hello all,

I am using the Linux distribution SuSe 7.1 along with the supplied apsfilter SuSe 1.8.

Preface:
We are using network printers (Brother HL1250 on NetGear PS110 Printserverboxes) and I managed to setup one printer just fine. Unfiltered output goes to lp1, filtered output in the flavors ascii, auto and raw use lps 2,3 and 4 respectively.

After using the lprsetup utility, I get proper /etc/printcap entries starting with lp1 as printer "remote". This printername appears to be hardcoded within /var/lib/apsfilter/apsfilter (called via all links from subdir /var/lib/apsfilter/bin.

I suspect, this is a SuSe "bastardized" version for easy configuration of ONE printer through lprsetup.

The problem I have been unable to solve is to get more than one network printer / printserver combination setup. I've copied /var/lib/apsfilter/apsfilter to /var/apsfilter/apsfiltertest, edited the "remote" entries to the appropriate printer name and created links from the /var/lib/apsfilter/bin directory to this edited scriptfile.

Apparently, the spool takes place in the proper spool directory, but does not end up at the printer. According to the log entry, the printer name I've edited in the modified apsfilter script cannot be found.

Perhaps there is an easier way of going about this, perhaps I need a different (non-SuSe-) version of apsfilter.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Volker
