Are you sure, that you typed in the command correctly ???
See !!! above.
Since it's a long command line, mailer like mutt start the next
line with a 'plus' ('+') sign to indicate, that it's _one_ line.
If you copy and paste it with that sign, then the shell command
doesn't do the right thing ...

I currently don't know any duplex bug.
BTW, you write to apsfilter-current.
So I can only assume (since you don't write anything concerning version
numbers), that you are using the developement version of apsfilter.
You should report the exact apsfilter version in use when doing
bug reports, so that we are sure to look for errors in the right
apsfilter version...
So you should make troubleshooting easier by using the apsfilter
bugform (howto document, how to report bugs) and see troubleshooting
document, to see, how to enable debugging in the apsfilter script.
Then please send a log of one unsuccessful print session.
Concerning duplex printing it would be fine, if you would to an
ls -lR of /tmp (as root), so that we can see the permissions of
tmp files that are used for the duplex print control ....
