can't use lpr from cmd line

Hi,

I just installed apsfilter on my freebsd-4.1 machine and was very
impressed with the functionality. I thought it was going to be hell
getting my machine to print to a HP laserjet 4000 connected to a Win95
machine via smbclient. I probably would have given up if it wasn't for
apsfilter.

I am having one problem though. I _can_ print from netscape etc... but I
_can't_ use lpr from the command line.

I've tried a couple of different switchs to see if they make it work but
as far as I understood 'lpr text.txt' should work. It seems to ... when I
run lpq it's there ... and then disappears after about 2 minutes. But
when I run upstairs to the printer it didn't print :(

I'm getting kinda tired of running upstairs... hopefully someone on this
list can help.

There's nothing in my log files that suggests anything went wrong (or
right for that matter).

my /etc/printcap:

# LABEL apsfilter
# apsfilter setup Wed Oct 4 10:15:24 EDT 2000
#
# DON'T DELETE THIS:
# APS_BASEDIR:/usr/local/apsfilter
#
# APS1_BEGIN:printer1:laserjet:letter:default
# - don't delete start label for apsfilter printer1
# - no other printer defines between BEGIN and END LABEL
#
lp|aps1-laserjet-letter-auto-default|Printer1 laserjet letter auto
default:\
    :lp=/dev/null:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-auto-default:\
    :lf=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-auto-default/log:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-auto-default/acct:\
    :if=/usr/local/apsfilter/filter/aps1-laserjet-letter-auto-default:\
    :mx#0:\
    :sh:
raw|aps2-laserjet-letter-raw|Printer1 laserjet letter raw:\
    :lp=/dev/null:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-raw:\
    :lf=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-raw/log:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/printer1-laserjet-letter-raw/acct:\
    :if=/usr/local/apsfilter/filter/aps2-laserjet-letter-raw:\
    :mx#0:\
    :sf:\
    :sh:
# APS1_END - don't delete this END LABEL for printer1

AAAHHHH... it just occured to me that I was looking at /var/log... and in
printcap is says /var/spool/lpd/.../log.

This is in that file when I try and print.

pap: not found
a2ps:/usr/local/share/a2ps/sheets/sheets.map:50: unexpected character `*'

I don't know what pap is...

Thanks,

P.S. Could you CC me as well as the list as I am not subscribed. Thanks
again,
