usage w/o printcap: ambiguous redirect

Hello,

I have been using apsfilter with command line lpr and printcap as set on
SuSE 6.3, and it works well.

Now I am trying to configure a graphical interface for printing options by
means of xpdq. This process does not use data in printcap, so I need to
specify filtering explicitely: I want to filter file $INPUT and redirect
the filtering result in file $OUTPUT.

However, when I run in my script

/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/<filter-name> $INPUT > $OUTPUT

or even on the command line

<path>/bin/<filter-name> alpha.jpg > beta

I always get the same error message:
/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/<filter-name> {$CR}: ambiguous redirect

So I cannot figure out how to apply the filter outside of the usual way
with /etc/printcap.

I would be very grateful if someone could explain to me how to achieve
that.
