problems with deskjet 500

I recently pulled an old deskjet 500 out of mothballs for usage as a spare, re
ran SETUP, and added both regular and third party deskjet500 drivers.

Printer works with lpr,  though it improperly processes many things,
lpr-Pdjet500, the printer speaketh not,though no errors are posted nor blinken
lights generated on the printer.  Using the  HP DeskJet 500, 3rd party PCL3+
driver [hpdj_500] elicits a flashing busy light on printer,  if I depress FF the
printer printeth " **** Unable to open the initial device, quitting. "

Any ideas as to how to rectify this behavior?
