Probably the best situation in UNIX environments -- you don't
even need ghostscript (but can use it anyway).

Maybe you should try the PCL mode. AFAIK ghostscript has some
generic drivers.

In current releases we handle that via "recode", but that's
just for flexibility.

Are you implying that apsfilter doesn't know PostScript printers?
In this case, I dare to say that your version is _really_ old...

Get the latest release (don't rely on distribution packages,
download the real tarball), install it and select the
generic PostScript printer, or some PCL driver.

Which apsfilter version does your Slackware provide? I think the
last time some Slackuser reported an error, it was some 5.x ... :-\
