When the colours changed so drastically from the old to the new cartridge it's a good chance that there is something wrong with your new one and you haven't got a new but (wrongly) re-filled cartridge. Is the HP51649A suitable for your DJ 610C at all? Are all cartridge contacts - and their counterparts - clean? What makes you believe there is something wrong with the printer's cpu? And since you've mentioned it besides the `printer itself', is it exchangeable like the ink cartridge(s)? 8-) How do the other primary colours (cyan and magenta) appear? Doesn't your printer print a test-page after you've changed the ink cartridge?
