You got this "hack" from the FAQ, right ?

Well, you need it only if your line printer spooler
doesn't support input filter to be executed when
printing on network printers.

Additonally you need to restart lpd, after configuring this...
Did you do that ?

I would suggest, you use apsfilters SETUP to configure a new
printer. Configure this time a "network printer".

Restart lpd and make sure, you have an /etc/hosts entry for
your printer.

The printer name you use in apsfilters SETUP should exactly
match with the printer name in /etc/hosts.

Perhaps try first to ping the printer with exactly that name.

It depends on your DNS configuration if its o.k. to use the
full qualified domain name of the printer or just the name of it.

i.e.: "remoteprinter.my.domain" or simply "remoteprinter"

One of the things why I still use Berkeley lpd over LPRng is,
that I dislike the additional complexity of LPRng.
Berkely lpd just works.
I'd say if you don't need one of LPRng's additional features
simply use Berkeley lpd. Its more than enough to get something
printed.

Additionally I dislike LPRngs handling of desplaying apsfilters
debugging output if it ever comes to the point that you have
to debug apsfilter itself. The prepending of LPRngs status
messages (timestamps etc) makes debugging apsfilter not easier..

Try lpd if installing a true remote printer fails ...
