Don't know what makes KDE different or special ...

If I were you I'd try to test everything step by step.

Use Postscript standard example files from gs sources or a
simple text file. Try to view it under X using gs, ghostsview
or gv ..

If that works try to print it on the commandline.

lpr file

Perhaps enable debugging in apsfilter if it fails.

If everything is o.k. so far it would be interesting
how KDE performs printing, how lpr is executed, what
commandline arguments to the lpr command are used etc ...

I think its clear and straitforward to test simply
functionality towards the problem you encounter with
complex applications where you don't know how printing
is actually performed ...
