Yes.

a) Normally it doesn't happen, since apsfilters automatic file type
   recognition preprocesses ASCII using a2ps

b) even if you use the "raw" printer you are able to use a per printer
   config file to send a magic escape sequence, that does printer
   initialization as you like/need.
