actually, its a typo, it is SuSE 7.1. Which doesn't make it any
better.

to be sure, I switched to 6.51 (tested by HP), which did not help, BUT:

I guess, you're right because I checked

>    hpijs v0.97: DeskJet 960C         (hpijs/DJ9xxVIP)
(The driver interface, using hpijs 1.0 in compatibility mode)

Now it works all right, although it cost me some time to adjust
the makefiles of ghostscript.

And now: This printer is awesome! Had an Epson stylus 740
before, and even in 300x300 the HP prints better than the
Epson in 720x720. And the photo mode is just
incredible.
