Just a suggestion, although apsfilter 6.x also was a great release
it would surely be fine for you and us to update to the latest 7.x
release. For you because of more features, for us only having to
support the latest release ;-)

Thats fine. BTW, for non-commercial use you also could manually
delete and install ghostscript-afpl or ghostscript-afpl-nox11.
If you have the X11 libraries installed there is no problem
to install the gs version including x11 support.

Thats pretty fine ...

I'm nor sure, but if I remember right we had a version recognition
problem in older apsfilter releases. A workaround would be, to
simply remove the checking code in SETUP.
If you upgrade to 7.1.1 this error will go away.

Well, what does gs -h tell you ??? Is ljet4 really included ???
If this should be another SETUP bug, please use apsfilter 7.1.1
as I told you. If there _should_ be another error, feel free to
report it and we will fix it for you as soon as possible.
But then please include gs -h output to your problem report.

Well, then you have a gs version installed, that has been
linked with X11 shared libs.
Look here, my gs is also linked with X1 shared libs.
user$ ldd `which gs`
/usr/local/bin/gs:
libpng.so.5 => /usr/local/lib/libpng.so.5 (0x28283000)
libz.so.2 => /usr/lib/libz.so.2 (0x282a5000)
libXt.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 (0x282b2000)
libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6 (0x282fc000)
libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (0x28305000)
libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x2831b000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x28329000)
libm.so.2 => /usr/lib/libm.so.2 (0x28404000)
libc.so.4 => /usr/lib/libc.so.4 (0x28420000)
libXThrStub.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXThrStub.so.6 (0x284b9000)
I assume, that you havent installed the ghostscript-xxx-nox11 port.
Or maybe during your experiments it got lost or has been replaced
with a port/package that is linked with X11 support ...

Now you know ? Well don't understand the logic in this sentence.
I thought gs is not finding at least one your X11 shared libs ?
How can apsfilter work if gs is NOT working ? Or did I misunderstand
something ?

Well, all your problems will go away by these draconic actions:
a) update FreeBSD ports collection, then you are able to get the
lastest apsfilter and ghostscript port.
b) Deinstall old ghostscript port entirely
root# cd /var/db/pkg
root# pkg_delete ghostscript-*
or using -f to force
root# pkg_delete -f ghostscript-*
c) Determnine, which gs version you want to use
Are you using ghostscript for non-commercial use ?
Y: use version 7.x
N: use version 6.5x
Have you XFree86 or XFree86-4 installed so that you can
use the gs port with X11 ?
Y: Then use ghostscript-(gnu|afpl)
N: Then use ghostscript-(gnu|afpl)-nox11
d) install ghostscript port first
cd /usr/ports/print/ghostscript-afpl-nox11
make install clean
cd /usr/ports/print/apsfilter
make install clean
Good luck
