What debugging output does aps2file -D > /dev/null emit exactly ???

Yes, please try. Some things in Slackware tended to be a little
bit "old backen" mixed with bad permissions. Migrating to
LPRng might fix permissions automatically when doing the
installation process...

BTW, I tried cups myself, but doesn't like cups.
O.k., you can manage your printer with cups ... but then ???
No real fine control over printing process ... apsfilter's -C/-Z opions
give you much more fine grained control over printing process.

HPIJS 1.0 driver core dumps under freebsd ... seems kind
of instable ... I think we have to go back to 0.97.

You also could try to use 0.97 and look if its more stable
for you ...

Try LPRng, try ghostscript 7.03 afpl && hpijs 0.97

Perhaps this makes a difference.
