Hmm, everthing has been said ... you draw the decision.

1. Install LPRng instead of lpd.

2. I personally use a HP DeskJet 970Cxi.

  Now I would try to buy a printer, that allows photo printing by
  inserting a memory card. The question is, if gimp-print already
  supports such a beast or if the HP driver supports such a printer.

  Look at alle the printers gimp-print and hpijs supports.
  Write it down. Look in linuxprinting. Write down the ranking.

  Then make a ranking.
  Look at the features, price and availability of all the printers.
