To be reliable, you'll definitely need a hardware counter, since page counting on the software side fails miserably when the filter gets "raw" input or some other format that can't be handled properly w.r.t the page count. The LPRng-HOWTO has a pretty decent coverage of accounting and related stuff, but be prepared to do serious fiddling. (And don't spend dollars counting pennies.) Michael
