Your "/usr/local/Acrobat4/bin/acroread" is probably a wrapper
script for the real binary, and it tries to enter /root for
some reason I haven't been able to fully understand.

(My acroread script mentions automounter stuff that makes no
real sense to me.)

The permission error is nothing to be worried about, but the
failing gawk (broken pipe) is still there... Are there any
error messages following that one?
