Need help restoring an old feature

Hi.

I just upgraded from apsfilter 5.2.0 to 7.2.1, and in the transition ended
up losing a feature that I've grown to like, and have no idea how to get
it back.

I use an HP Deskjet 520, and when I installed 5.2.0 out of the box, all
of a sudden my elm message headers started coming out with some nice
formatting:

From: line is bolded in two different pitches ("From:" is one, text is
  another, and larger
To: line is bold and italicized
Subject: line is bolded in two different pitches ("Subject:" is one, text is
  another, and larger
Date: line is bold and italicized

Also, lines in the body that had the > to indicate previous appearance
were italicized as well.

Now, with 7.2.1, the From and Subject lines are bolded, but only in one
size vice two, and the text field is shaded rather than being a larger
pitch. The To and Date lines are no longer italicized; they are polka-dotted
(I don't know the right name for the effect). And there is no italicization
in the message body at all.

I've just installed 7.2.1, and did so with a completely clean slate - got
rid of /etc/printcap; got rid of the old location (/usr/local/lib/apsfilter);
and got rid of the various rc files in /etc and the files in /var/spool and
/var/spool/lpd (and lp1).

I run linux 2.4.9, and I have done nothing special with printing in any
way that I know. I use lpr-0.48.1 (had been a much older version until
yesterday, but this of course didn't change anything).

Also, I had been using the cdjmono and deskjet drivers from ghostscript-5.50.
I've just upgraded that to gs-7.04 (always Aladdin vice Gnu), and I've also
installed pcl3. No matter which driver I select that's appropriate for
the HP DJ 520, I get the same results (even the same when trying other
DJ drivers, like the DJ 550). When I go back and re-install
5.2.0 with the same clean slate, I get the original (and desired) result
(predictably).

So I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the changes over time in
apsfilter rather than upgrades to things like gs and so forth.

Since I have no idea what nifty property made this happen in the first place,
I have no idea where to look to find the difference. I hope someone could
give me a hint as to what I should be trying to change.

Thx,
