That rings a bell. You're not using an older SuSE Linux, are you?
I'm asking because in SuSE 7.3, they did just what you describe:
They changed the default format from f to l without telling anyone,
and they did it by patching the code, not in lpd.conf.

If your older LPRng has the lpd.conf file, it should suffice to add

default_format=f

in that file.
