?!? There shouldn't be any difference...
Are you using a special kind of printer driver in
OpenOffice (other than "Generic PostScript")?

I have no idea which scripts (other than apsfilter) are
used on your system during the print process -- there
could be wrappers for some commands that set up options
and stuff.
(Although there shouldn't be any reason to start those
scripts like an interactive shell...)

Which release is gnu-gs right now? (6.53 or something?)
Why don't you get 7.04 (might be called "afpl-gs") and
try that? The cdj970 driver will probably not be included,
so you'll have to compile it yourself...
