Since I'm not subscribed to a gs list my first attempt was to
ask people who use ghostscript daily.

Which one compared to which?
GNU to AFPL or AFPL to GNU? 8-|

There are now 3 "most recent" versions:
7.04: the latest AFPL
7.05: the latest GNU
7.21: the latest development (when I downloaded it)

Have you ever tried to dig through the GS doc? 8-)
It's all HTML!
And "Readme.htm" just gives an overview of ghostscript, just general stuff.
Nothing about technical details/differences.

I might have overseen something, but I couldn't find anything
telling about the _individual_ features.

Of course! :-)
That's where I usually start when I look for new versions.
