configuration

Hello. I am running FreeBSD 4.6release and installed apsfilter thru the
ports system (a package actually) and all its dependencies. I am not
running XFree86 on this machine. It is not installed.

I have an HP laserjet 4MV on the network and it is open to LPR and
AppleTalk jobs (for my mac). I know my printer is in good working order.

I have selected the ljet4 driver, an atalk connection with the NBP name
(MiLL), medium, gray, 300x300, auto

when I attempt a test page I get the following:
Printing Test page using:
gs -q -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dPARANOIDSAFER
-dSAFER -r600x600 -sDEVICE=ljet4 -sPAPERSIZE=letter
-sOutputFile='/tmp/apsfilter14915/test_page.aps' setup/test.ps

Printing test page...
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 607563 Aug 12 21:52
/tmp/apsfilter14915/test_page.aps
: Bad name

then I do a 'lpc restart all' and it looks ok.
then i try 'lpr /etc/hosts'

and syslog shows:

roswell lpd[15260]: roswell.tek-shop.com requests printjob lp
roswell lpd[15260]: lp: job could not be printed
(cfA007roswell.tek-shop.com)

If i try to interface to the printer via LPD, it tries to print a test
page and then shows:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 607563Aug 12 23:00
/tmp/apsfilter15550/test_page.aps
lpr: raw@mill.tek-shop.com: unknown printer

If i configre a basic printcap manually, I can talk to the printer and
print simple text pages, but no pdf's.

funny thing is, i have set this sort of thing up before on similar
machines and gotten it to work.

I'm wondering if there may be some ports that I need that I have not
installed yet. I'm also wondering if I should have used the noX11 version
of Ghostscript because I'm not using X.

any help would be great

thanks

/eric
