| print jobs disappear |

question!
To print man pages, I have been using the following command format:
a2ps -Php5ps /usr/share/man/man1/apsfilter.1.gz
Usually this works for one or two man pages; but then subsequent attempts
to print a man page are unsuccessful. Sometimes the printer (a local
HPLJ5M connected to /dev/lp0) flashes the message "data received," but
nothing prints, nor does a print job appear in the print queue.
Also, some man pages print out with a nice border (two pages per
letter-size sheet), but the text is printed as ASCII rather than as SGML
(that is, the formatting codes are displayed, rather than being interpreted).
system:

Debian Woody (testing distribution)
lprng
apsfilter
a2ps
gs-aladdin
