Whoops.  Looks like a simple case of RTFM.  I'm using the stock BSD lpd 
which does not use an input-filter if printing to a remote printer.  
Filtering is up to the remote printer to sort out.  If you're talking to 
an HP printer with a JetDirect card, then set the printer's name as 
"text".

Here's an example:

ps45:colorlj:\
        :lp=:\
        :rm=ps45:\
        :rp=text:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/ps45:\
        :lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:

No need to use apsfilter unless it's a local printer.
