RE Epson 980

HI,
     ive just installed apsfilter and cannot get the Epson 980 to run 
with the pips-sc980 driver, when i goto print a test page the error is 
as follows

ERROR: additional filter 'pips-sc980' was not found;
       can't create test page
a locate pips brings up the following drivers

 Do i need to compile apsfilter with any special arguments to get this 
driver to work? im currently using the gimp-print driver but i am unable 
to connect to the printer via samba from a remote winXP machine which 
says the printer is not using the correct driver. Any help or advice 
would be much appreciated.
The machine the printer is connected to is FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE running 
smbd version 2.2.8a.
